PostHeaderIcon Do You Make These Common Mistakes in Online Poker?

All too often, beginners spend ages reading up on poker theory, studying hands, and pondering strategies, only to sit down in front of their PC and throw away good chips in a game of online texas holdem poker. The reason for their loss usually isn’t bad luck, or lack of theoretical knowledge, it’s simply because they make the same common newbie mistakes every time they play.

There’s no magic to winning, all you need is a good understanding of the rules and a sensible approach to play, but for some reason, online poker seems to encourage people to make certain mistakes.

Mistake number one is not paying enough attention. People read about experienced pros playing ten games at once, and try to mirror that, thinking “the more hands I play, the more I’ll win”. This works if you’re experienced, but when you’re new to the game you need to pay closer attention to each hand.

Mistake number two is using auto-play too much – partly because of mistake number one. Auto play can often send strong tells – you’re checking instantly because you’re weak, and auto betting because you’re strong, for example. Playing by hand and pausing for a few seconds here and there mixes things up a bit, making you harder to read.

Mistake number three is showing your cards. You may think you’re making yourself look strong and confident, but you’re actually just being cocky. Don’t ever share information unless you absolutely have to – people will remember what you did in the past, and use that knowledge to their advantage.

Finally, mistake number four is trash talking. If someone is playing poker like a newbie, leave them to it. Driving them away from the table won’t help your game, and will make people hate you.
